• I bought this book to supplement a project my nine-year-old was doing on Ada Byron Lovelace. I like how this biography is organized and, even though it was likely written for a younger teen in mind, my daughter was able to follow along.
• I think this was a very well-researched biography and I really liked how the author didn’t shy away from Ada’s less appealing traits, and instead presented the reader with an objective, nuanced picture of both the woman and the mathematical genius.
  
  Ada Lovelace was such a remarkable woman, but sadly she didn’t get nearly enough recognition for her groundbreaking work while she was alive and even today she’s left to linger in men’s shadows too much, I think. I really enjoyed discovering more about her and think this book is an excellent way to learn more about this fascinating, truly extraordinary historical figure.
  
  I was very much struck by how sad and constricted her life was growing up. I was especially astounded by the behavior of her controlling and rather cold-hearted, even cruel, mother. I’d have liked there to have been a bit more focus on Ada as a wife and mother, but the dearth of material might have made that difficult to do and Ada’s focus also seems to have been more on her research rather than her personal life.
  
  This is not a story with a happy ending and I was quite saddened to discover that not only did Ada die young, but also after suffering a lot of pain, in isolation, and with only the very dubious “comfort” of her mother. I was appalled by the latter’s lack of respect for Ada’s final wishes.
  
  This was a very enlightening book. The author presented her findings in a clear way while also keeping it an enjoyable and fluent read.
  
  Absolutely recommend.
• This well researched biography tells about the first computer programmer in the world, Ada Byron Lovelace. Ada was the daughter of Lord Byron, the famous poet, but her mother chose to raise her on science and mathematics to combat the influence of her father's heritage. The details of her course of study and relationship with her mother are covered, as well as her meeting with Charles Babbage and his ideas about a Difference Engine and an Analytical Engine. Combining the creativity of her father and her logical training, Ada developed the idea of cards to program the engines - even to do sequences and loops.
  
  Photos of the Difference Engine, portraits of Ada and her parents, even copies of pages from her school exercise books all add to the text. An appendix includes the notes Ada made as she translated the original article about Babbage's Difference Engine. A second appendix includes the notes from the British Association for the Advancement of Science as they debated whether to fund the construction of the Analytical Engine. There are also extensive source notes for all the quotes within the text, a glossary, and bibliography.
  
  This is recommended for ages 10 -14. Details about Lovelace's gambling and laudanum use, among other facts, will be better understood by readers beyond the elementary grades.
• Ada Byron Lovelace had the misfortune of having a famous father (Lord Byron) who abandoned her and her mother when Ada was only one month old. Despite the immense disadvantages of her childhood and gender, Ada was determined to learn all she could in the fields of math and science.
  
  Dreaming in Code is good bridge for middle school readers ready for a longer biography. At 176 pages, it probably won't be read in one sitting. I would caution parents that it does deal with some mature topics. The descriptions of Ada's work may also be a bit challenging for readers to understand. While overall it was interesting to learn about Ms. Lovelace, her life was rather tragic and her gender did pose significant challenges when it came to being fully accepted in the worlds of math and science.
  
  Emily Arnold McCully has tackled a difficult topic and made it accessible for middle and high school readers. I think students today should be made aware of the female pioneers who paved the way for future generations.

  I think Donaldson is writing with a future television adaptation in mind. Yes, it’s more straight forward that what we are used to from him, but it’s fun! Seriously this story is lots of fun and super easy to get lost in if you let yourself. I see huge potential in what he’s setting up and am already sad I’m going to finish The War Within in the next couple days and be waiting once again.
• I truly enjoyed this story and look forward to the next adventure, highly recommended for everyone, Mr. Donaldson has a way to keep you involved.
• Stephen is an amazingly creative storyteller and I love the depth of the worlds he creates. But damn, he gets way too sucked into re-hashing the same character descriptions and conflicts over and over and over again. Don't TELL us, SHOW us. His earlier writing had much better pacing and exposition, and you will find flashes of that in this book - unfortunately it's thinly sandwiched between a lot of really monotonous brooding.
• This is some high-octane Donaldson -- I liked this book much better than the first installment (Seventh Decimate) -- and I like that one quite a lot. Donaldson kicks the LOST-like mysteries into high gear. What is REALLY going on? What is everyone REALLY up to? What are their true motivations? Wheels within wheels within wheels .... I was counting down the days until this appeared on my . I was not disappointed. I am a huge, huge fan of the Covenant series -- I like this series the most so far out of all his non-Land works. Two thumbs way up!! Bring on the next volume!!
• Awesome! Outstanding! Wow! Just pick exclamation at random. Stephen Donaldson is my favorite author, so I might be a bit bias. LOL. Actually, this is probably the best non-covenant book of his he has written. I too could see mini - series adaptation, even though he might not have consciously intended that. Book 1 - The Seventh Decimate - was a great start to this trilogy and The War Within a wonderful continuation. It's going to be a long 18+ months!
  
  The characters are so well crafted, full of such mystery and depth. Depth. That's what I like in Donaldson's works. You can't just skim read or zone out read this book. You have to pay attention. I always re-read for the things missed the first time. This is just a great series. Consider picking it up. You shouldn't be disappointed.

• I feel humble even saying she is one of America's greats. If you have trouble 'getting' her writing, you probably aren't a Southerner! Neither am I so when I listened to her tell her own stories and it made a world of difference to hear the cadence and the accent. Even though it's been years since I heard her read (it was a tape that I can't play...having no tape player any longer)...I cant't help but HEAR her voice whenever I READ her words. What a gift she is to us readers. The eccentric characters, the humor...her view of Southern life. Her stories stay fresh and delightful even when I read the over and over through the years.
• I love having a collection of stories that shows the author's experimentation with different voices. We usually have "Why I Live at the P.O." in anthologies, and it was refreshing to read it again, in some ways for the first time decades after junior high. But to have the less well known titles tucked away into a collection like this shows the breadth of the author's talent and the politics of anthologies!
• I recently toured Welty'so home in Jackson, MS. Good background to have while reading her stories. If you are interested in southern culture or are familiar with it, this is a great story to read.
• This is a voluminous anthology of short stories. There are four collections of short stories and two "uncollected" short stories at the end. I believe they are in chronological order. I tried to read one story a day and it took me perhaps two months to work my way completely through them. I purchased both the and Audiobook and read and listened at the same time. This added to the experience for me. Some of the narration was excellent.
  
  Reading these stories in chronological order had an educational value for me. I could sense the evolution and maturation of the author. In truth, my own tastes are fairly basic and my favorite collection was the first, "A Green Curtain and Other Stories". However that is simply a matter of personal taste and all of the writing is excellent.
  
  It seemed to me that as Miss Welty's writing career went on she became more involved in symbolism. Her first stories are mostly in the American South and this continues throughout. The first collection appears to me to be largely "Southern Gothic".
  
  Later, some of Miss Welty's settings are other locations such as San Francisco and on a ship voyage. I have read an excellent biography of Miss Welty by Suzanne Marrs. I have discovered that some of these stories have an autobiographical aspect to them. Learning about that has made a great difference in my appreciation of these particular stories.
  
  She writes a story based on Greek Mythology. Some of the later stories are quite excellent. All are very professional. I enjoyed some of the later, but not others. It may be merely that she became too sophisticated in style for me. One of the last stories, "Where Is The Voice Coming From?" was quite stark and dramatic. Another later story, "The Burning" proved very painful for me to read.
  
  In summary, this was a very professional product, reflecting the work of a truly great, iconic author. I am very glad that I was to read these stories. Thank You...
• Had I more experience in reading Eudora Welty, I would have given these collected stories five stars. I am a latecomer to her writings. She is obviously a superb writer, but, being new to the way she writes, I tended to get lost in the narratives, losing track of who's speaking and where the story is going. She's writing from a Southern perspective, and it would help to be well-versed in her writing style before reading these. These collected stories are long; the more I read, the more I began to understand her writing and appreciated it more.
• What a wonderful find- all of Eudora Welty's stories in one volume to carry and read on ! One of our greatest Southern writers, Welty creates both ordinary and quirky people and situations with a wit and wise voice that is unique. The most charming of our Southern pantheon of mid-century writers (Faulkner, Williams, O'Connor, Capote, Harper Lee, etc.) If you don't already know Welty, do get this book - dozens of stories and may voices and moods!
• The Burning and The Wide Net are both permanent short American tales. But with Eudora Welty, everything is Saturday night turning into Sunday morning.
• Beautifully written stories that reflect the aftermath and hardships of life many decades after the end of slavery. Her characters are so true to themselves. What a shame that this author has gone unrecognized for so long! I look forward to reading all of her books.

• I really enjoy this series quite a bit and this latest book was a good continuation of the series. I am not going to go into details but I liked that a lot of the problems with Spooky and the MC got resolved in this book as she was driving me crazy in the second book. I enjoy the building aspect of the series and appreciate that we still get battles and dungeon time in too. I like most of the characters and feel they are well written and interesting enough to care about. I do wish this books timeline was a bit longer but it wasn't too short so that's just a minor quibble on my part. I think its interesting reading about the magic MMorpg style game system rewriting the world. However I felt like that aspect can get out of control sometimes. One thing that grew a bit too much in my opinion was the puns/earth sayings/culture references popping up everywhere, even in the mouths of random npcs who are apparently forced to spout them by the system. Going this far it makes one worry that they will become slaves to the system as it grows stronger and while that's an interesting dilemma I suppose I hope the author will reign it in so that everyone on the world/moon wont become flat, annoying 1 dimensional characters when interacting with the elite player characters like the MC.
• Book 3 in the series continues the good LitRPG storytelling. Though a few things do change that I think most fans will enjoy. Joe, the main character (MC), finally knows that the world he is in is not a game. That one change really improves the story because now the MC isn’t limited by that confining POV. Additionally, one of the most common complaints about book 2 was the way Spooky was handled and seemed to change. Well, that’s been modified too. I won’t say how, but the character feels more like she did in book 1. Also, the novel focuses around Joe, though you still get some smaller chapters showing what is happening with the other kingdoms and villains.
  
  Other than those changes, the story still has the same good action adventure stuff it always had. There are some very funny scenes, my favorite being the one with the love sick troll. There are some good dungeon crawls, minor politics, and a storyline towards the end that felt a little rushed but had some surprising twists.
  
  Overall, a good entertaining read.

• myself and a few others had issues with book two. So glad they got cleared up in this one. Definitely worth the read. the moon that joe and 'spooky' live on is opened up and you begin to see how the world around them is reacting to to the changes in the UI. Compelling stuff. If you love a good solid grind and city/world building definitely give it a read. Love the character advancement an I also loved Os. Can't say more without spoilers. #th
• I really liked the flow of the series so far, everything is set up beforehand and has a payoff later in the series, and yet it isn't always obvious how it will be used. Kip Terrington does a great job of creating characters that are multi-faceted and interesting while also making the emotional situations and decisions believable. This series combines the fun of an adventure and fantasy tale with the fun of Culumbo and Encyclopedia Brown; You know that somehow the situation will be resolved, often in Joe's favor, but much of the fun is in how he does it, and how the UI interacts with these unexpected results.
• Greatly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next.
